City of Mankato Animal Impound scheduled to open Wednesday, January 1

Beginning on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, the City of Mankato will open an animal impound facility at 903 Mound Ave. The impound is for lost or stray dogs located within City limits. Dogs will receive proper care and essential veterinarian services while at the impound. The City is partnering with community organizations that specialize in animal care to establish the best possible outcomes for impounded dogs.

Staffing
Animals at the impound will be cared for throughout the day and evening by Mankato Department of Public Safety staff and part-time employees.

Reunification
Every effort will be made to reunite dogs with their owners, including, canvassing neighborhoods, scanning microchips, social media posts, and opt-in lost dog alerts. Dogs can be picked up between 3:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. seven days a week or by appointment.

Foster and Adoption
Public Safety is partnering with local organizations to provide foster care and adoption services. Impounded dogs that meet the foster and adoption criteria will be transferred to our partners when appropriate.

Fees
Pet owners will be required to pay animal impound fees to retrieve their dog.

  • $50/day for the first impoundment
  • $75/day for additional times the same dog is impounded

Veterinary Services
Public Safety has an arrangement with a local pet hospital to provide veterinary services to impounded dogs as needed.
