The City of Saint Peter is proud to share progress on the Gorman Park Improvement Project, a multi-year initiative to reimagine one of the community’s most beloved public spaces. The project, which began in July 2025, is already transforming the park to be safer, more welcoming, and more inclusive—while honoring the legacy of the iconic TREEmendous Playground.

The City is also thrilled to recognize the generosity of our first round of donors, whose contributions are helping bring this vision to life:

  • Peter Ambassadors:$100,000
  • Mankato Clinic Foundation:$50,000
  • Schmidt Foundation: $25,000
  • Pioneer Bank: $25,000
  • The Kathy Hendrickson Memorial:$6,000
  • Kiwanis:$4,869

“The support from our local organizations reflects the deep connection Saint Peter residents have to Gorman Park,” said Todd Prafke, City Administrator. “These donations are helping us preserve the spirit of TREEmendous while creating a park that is accessible and welcoming for all children and families.”

Honoring the Past, Building for the Future
Since its creation after the 1998 tornado, the TREEmendous Playground has been a symbol of community pride and resilience. While the original wooden structure has reached the end of its safe lifespan, the Gorman Park Improvement Project will thoughtfully integrate new features—including inclusive playground elements, ADA-compliant surfacing, accessible walking trails, pollinator-friendly landscaping, shaded seating, and a literary garden—while preserving signature features of TREEmendous that made it special.

Phase 1 Progress
Phase 1 of the project is already well underway. Crews have removed the smaller playground structure, installed new accessible sidewalks, and are currently completing installation of the new playground equipment and shade structures. This phase is expected to wrap up in early November 2025. The larger TREEmendous Playground remains open and accessible via South Fifth Street throughout Phase 1 construction.
