- Senate Republicans have filed a formal ethics complaint against DFL Senate President Bobby Joe Champion of Minneapolis. They cited concerns about conflicts of interest and violations of ethical conduct standards stemming from his role as a legislator and attorney. The complaint alleges that Senator Champion used his elected position to advocate and secure money to benefit his legal clients. The complaint says the Senate President never disclosed these relationships to the public. The complaint was submitted to DFL Senator Sandy Pappas (pap-us), chair of the Subcommittee on Ethical Conduct. Pappas assumed the role after Senator Champion stepped down due to these complaints.
- DFL Representative Brad Tabke of Shakopee was once again declared the winner of House District 54A. Thursday, the House Ethics Committee heard arguments about the election that Tabke narrowly won over Republican Aaron Paul. 14 votes decided the election, but it was discovered that 20 ballots went missing. After an investigation and court case, Tabke was declared the winner. On Thursday, the Ethics Committee rejected a motion to reject those returns and approved a measure that no action should be taken in this case. Tabke’s victory keeps the House tied with 67 Democrats and 67 Republicans.
- The Minnesota Department of Education is threatening to terminate a nonprofit that has oversight of 16 charter schools. The state agency is criticizing Pillsbury United Communities of Minneapolis for not addressing problems at nine of the schools it manages, Two of the schools include LoveWorks Academy for Arts, which shut down last year after Pillsbury United revoked its charter, and Minnesota Internship Center, which has been plagued with fraud, poor test scores and financial issues. The Education Department says Pillsbury United will not be able to charter any more schools or expand existing schools until it deals with dozens of deficiencies.
