  • Rochester Public Schools requests the federal government to reconsider the recent cancellation of a one-point-nine million dollar grant. Superintendent Doctor Kent Pekel announced at yesterday’s school board meeting. The school district has 30 days to file for reconsideration. Pekel says that without the funding from the U.S. Department of Education, the school-based Mental Health Scholars program is in jeopardy. The Department of Education told RPS the grant cancellation was due to concerns about merit, excellence, and fairness.
  • The Vikings organization wants Minnesota legislators to pay 20 million dollars a year to cover the cost of upkeep of U. S. Bank Stadium. The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority believes the sports arena will need close to 300 million dollars in maintenance over the next ten years. MSFA operates the state-owned stadium. State Senator Frentz of North Mankato is the sponsor of the proposal. He told the Senate Taxes Committee yesterday that an ongoing stream of revenue for capital improvements was key to keeping the stadium in top shape. The plan has bipartisan support in both chambers, but passage is uncertain.
