The Mankato Family YMCA Announced yesterday that they are shutting down their Brother/Sister Mentoring Program. A statement released by

Executive Director Andrew Burk and President of the Board of Directors Zach Kolars cited multiple factors behind the decision:

“Dear Valued Mankato Family YMCA Community,

It is with sincere regret that the Mankato Family YMCA must announce a discontinued operation of our highly cherished Brother/Sister Program, effective December 1, 2025. We understand the profound impact this news will have, as for 57 years this program embodies our core belief that every young person deserves a champion—someone to simply listen, support challenges, and encourage dreams. The meaningful mentorship connections forged through this initiative are vital, helping youth find joy, unlock potential, and demonstrate improved confidence and better decision-making skills.

The reason for this unavoidable stoppage is a sudden change in regulatory requirements, a shift in risk assessment, and the loss of a specific insurance carrier. We ask for your patience and support while we explore a comprehensive strategy, including seeking new, dedicated and sustainable options specifically for this very important community work. Our commitment remains unwavering as we seek out another supportive, caring and safe environment where the mentorship of youth can continue to thrive in the community.

We are optimistic about the future. We look forward to a time when committed volunteers and young participants, continue the rewarding work that demonstrates how a small commitment truly makes a big, lasting impact on a young life. We will provide updates on our progress in the coming months.”
