For 35 years, SMILES Center for Independent Living has been empowering people with disabilities across Southern Minnesota to live with dignity, choice, and independence. The organization offers a wide range of services, from peer support and advocacy to skills training, transition assistance, and resources for housing, transportation, and employment. SMILES also works to promote accessibility and inclusion in every aspect of community life.

To mark this milestone, SMILES is inviting the public to its 35th Anniversary Open House on Thursday, August 28, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its Mankato office, located at 709 South Front Street. Guests can enjoy cake and refreshments, learn more about SMILES’ programs, meet staff, and look back on the organization’s growth and impact over the years.

Organizers say the celebration is not only a chance to reflect on the past but also to look ahead. “Independence is not just a goal—it’s a right,” SMILES leaders note, adding that the work continues to ensure every person in the region has the opportunity to thrive.
