U-of-M expert: Russian missiles landing in Poland probably not intended to escalate war
A U-of-M foreign policy expert says it appears Russian missiles landing beyond the Ukraine border in Poland was probably not intentional, and so is a cause for concern but not panic. Political Science Associate Professor Kathleen Collins says if the Russian government’s intent was to escalate the war, there would be signs:
…”repositioning of their troops,… putting on alert their nuclear facilities — and none of that has yet been reported. So I’m sure those are all things that the U-S government is monitoring for, and has been for the past many months.”
Collins says if any of that happened, the U-S and NATO would be collectively considering a much stronger response — but “at the moment… we’re certainly not there yet.” Collins says Russia’s barrage of missile strikes against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is a desperate attempt by Putin to gain an advantage going into the winter.
