Minnesota State University Mankato Announces Suspension of 86 Programs and Certificates after Academic Program Portfolio Review
Minnesota State University Mankato announced that 86 Programs and Certificates will be suspended following an Academic Program Portfolio review that originally began in August of 2024 and just recently completed. In a letter to the campus community, President Edward Inch addressed the reasoning behind the decision
Dear Campus Community,
Over the last year, we have embarked on a collaborative process to review our academic program portfolio and align it more effectively with student demand and projected future economic needs. Our current portfolio—comprising 306 degree programs and certificates—extends beyond our available resources and is substantially larger than those of our peer institutions. Like any organization, we must periodically assess our strategic direction and adapt to changing needs, and this review is long overdue. The upcoming changes will focus our resources and will yield cost savings and resources for reinvestment.
I want to acknowledge the tremendous work and contributions made by our community. Grounded in previous work around strategic budget planning within the portfolio, the process was shaped and honed through multiple listening sessions, Meet & Confer discussions, town halls and college discussions to reflect our best opportunities moving forward. I do not take any decision to change or suspend programs lightly. The process undertaken to review and decide on a new program portfolio reflects the work and recommendations of many constituents.
The results of this work are available on our website. They reflect changing student and market demands, while identifying opportunities to consolidate similar programs, merge other programs and create more interdisciplinary opportunities to better meet emerging regional needs.
The new portfolio includes 216 programs and certificates, including 12 new offerings. It suspends 86 programs and certificates. The program suspensions impact about 1.6% of our current student population for degrees and 0.8% for certificates. We are committed to ensuring that all students currently affected by these suspensions will have an opportunity to finish their programs here. Working together, we will review and map out the pathway to completion for each of those students.
Redesigning our portfolio is difficult work, and I recognize the concerns that come with change. As we continue to navigate the changes, we will work to assess and adjust as needed to accommodate the revised portfolio. Because many components of the suspended programs are already integrated into other retained programs, I am hopeful that the transition will be smooth, instructional continuity will be maintained and staffing disruptions due to these changes will be minimal.
While this work is challenging, our commitment to our students remains unwavering. We will provide them with a strong, well-rounded and comprehensive educational experience that reflects their priorities and aligns with the future community and economic needs of our region and state.
