- A District Court Judge has ruled Democrat Brad Tabke is the winner of House Race 54A covering the Shakopee area. The judge ruled there was insufficient evidence suggesting the other candidate, Republican Aaron Paul, should be granted a special election. Tabke won the election with 14 votes, but it was later discovered that 20 were missing. Testimony from 12 of those voters showed both sides received an additional six votes, making it mathematically impossible for Paul to overturn the result. Tabke was sworn in over the weekend for his seat in the House. Paul can appeal to the state Supreme Court.
- Congresswoman Angie Craig says more than one point two million dollars in federal grant funding will increase access to biofuels in Scott County. E&K Convenience in Prior Lake will receive 520 thousand dollars to install E-15 and B-20 dispensers, an ethanol storage tank, and a biodiesel storage tank at two stations. Hennen’s Auto Service is getting 604 thousand dollars to install E-15, E-85, and B-20 pumps and ethanol and biodiesel storage tanks in Shakopee. Craig says, “Increasing the production and availability of biofuels is a critical step in implementing the all-of-the-above energy policy we need to stay ahead, and Minnesota is leading the way.”
- UnitedHealth Group has been ordered to pay $165 million in penalties and restitution. A judge determined that a company acquired by the Eden Prairie-based insurer engaged in deceptive practices while selling health insurance benefits in Massachusetts. The company, HealthMarkets Incorporated, was purchased over five years ago. UnitedHealth Group plans to appeal the judge’s decision.
