Walz economic development budget includes paid family/medical leave, broadband expansion

Paid family and medical leave — one prominent part of Governor Tim Walz’s state budget plan to invest in Minnesota’s economic future.  Backers contend it not only helps families take care of loved ones, but also makes Minnesota more attractive to badly-needed workers.  The governor says:

“I’m telling people who are betting against Minnesota, that’s a bad bet — because this state has proven time and time again with economic growth, as others (are) coming out of the pandemic, we’re doubling down.”

Opponents warn the cost of paid family and medical leave will put additional burden on already-struggling businesses.

Also in the governor’s proposal, says Employment and Economic Development Commissioner Steve Grove…

“276 million dollars in this budget to finish the job:  to connect every house in our state to high-speed broadband.”

Backers say broadband is a critical component of economic development, especially in rural Minnesota.
