Protesters Want Expansion of U of M Native American Promise Tuition Program
Protesters will be on the University of Minnesota campus later today (Friday 5:30pm) calling for an expansion of the Native American Promise tuition program. Sorcha Lona with Students for a Democratic Society says only 18 freshmen received aid in the program’s first year:
“We know that the university has the funding necessary to provide all Native students with free tuition even before grants, scholarships, and aid. Eighteen students with partial funding is a laughable number.”
Lona says the program itself does not fully cover tuition. They are also urging the U of M to fully fund the American Indian Studies Department.
