- On April 7, 2025, at approximately 3 a.m., Olmsted County deputies responded to Byron High School for a smoke alarm call. Responding deputies observed a door with broken glass leading into the building. A search of the building was conducted, and no one was located inside. Additionally, an incendiary device was located that was later determined to be a smoke-style device. This is an active investigation, and no further information can be released.
- People in Minnesota and worldwide are mourning the loss of wildlife photographer Jim Brandenburg. He died Friday at his home in Medina at age 79. Governor Tim Walz said on Saturday, “Minnesota lost a legend yesterday in wildlife photographer Jim Brandenburg. Gwen and I are sending our love to his family.” Many of his photos appeared in National Geographic, and he received their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023. Brandenburg was from Luverne in the southwest corner of the state but was well-known for his nature photography in northern Minnesota and had a showroom in Ely.

Highway 71 near Sanborn closed for railroad bridge work starting today
- A man is jailed in Hennepin County for allegedly stealing 27 handguns from a U-P-S shipping facility where he was working. The Minneapolis Police Department says officers tracked the suspect to Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake, and he was arrested with drugs and thousands of dollars in cash. The North Side Community Response Team has recovered eight of the guns and is working with the ATF to locate the 19 guns still missing.
