The DNR is recruiting candidates without previous law enforcement experience to apply for its CO Prep program. DNR Captain Jeff Johanson says the CO Prep program provides the candidate with the necessary education to become licensed peace officers and attend the Conservation Academy at Camp Ripley:

“We have roughly 20 or so vacancies statewide for conservation officer positions when we’re at full strength were approximately in that one 180 to 185 range.”

Successful applicants will receive about 22 weeks of law enforcement education and training at Hennepin Technical College before beginning the CO Academy in the spring of 2024. During their time at Hennepin Technical College and at the CO Academy, candidates will be paid 70 percent of the base salary for a conservation officer. There will be a CO Prep open house tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m. at the DNR Central office in St. Paul and on March 20th from 4 -7 at the Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in Cloquet.
