Finstad, Fischbach, Grassley, Ernst want extension of higher line speeds at some pork plants
U-S Representatives Brad Finstad and Michelle Fischbach from Minnesota, and Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst from Iowa, are among those asking U-S Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to extend a trial of increased line speeds at six pork processing plants.
Congressman Finstad says an extension will allow facilities such as Quality Pork Processors in Austin to continue functioning at full operational capacity. He contends the 12-month trial period “has clearly demonstrated that increased line speeds are safe and effective, resulting in higher processing capacity and lower consumer costs.” The United Food and Commercial Workers Union said last year it’s comfortable with the program because companies agreed to increase staffing when line speeds accelerate to ensure safety.
A bill that Democrats say will improve safety for workers at meat and poultry processing plants has been moving forward in the *Minnesota* House.
