Five students at Minnesota State University- Mankato have had their student visas terminated. MSU-Mankato President Edward Inch says neither the university nor the students received notification of the termination of their records within the Student Exchange Visitor Information System by the U-S Department of Homeland Security. The changes were only discovered after the university “ran a status check.” The move comes after a wave of high-profile arrests of international students at universities across the country. In the last week, two university students in Minnesota have been detained by ICE.

“These are troubling times, and this situation is unlike any we have navigated before,” University President Edward Inch said in an email to the student body. “I am asking for your help. These are difficult situations with many folks working diligently to respond to inquiries, support one another and our students, and advocate where possible.”

“I ask all of you to please be sensitive to the fact that most information about the students cannot be shared due to student privacy laws. Speculation and sharing rumors is not helpful and causes additional distress and confusion.”

The students have not been detained by ICE. Instead, they have been asked to self-deport within 60 days.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.
