GreenSeam released their 2025 State of Ag Report as part of National Ag day at the Capitol building in St. Paul yesterday. The report compiles data and outlooks regarding trends in the Ag Industry, and challenges facing farmers and producers.

Survey Results: Overall, confidence in agribusiness remains high, as a majority of respondents expressed optimism about the direction of agribusiness in their region (63%), though a notable portion remained neutral (20%) or expressed concerns about future uncertainties. Many cited business diversification and expanded markets as sources of optimism, while others pointed to declining commodity prices and increasing costs as potential threats.

Business expansion remains a priority, with a significant number of manufacturers and food processors planning to introduce new ventures. However, economic pressures continue to be a major hurdle, as the majority of respondents reported concerns over rising costs. In addition, input prices, wages, and tax burdens were frequently mentioned as factors limiting their success.

Regulatory policies continue to generate mixed reactions, with some respondents seeing benefits in recent legislative changes while others express concerns over increased regulatory complexity. A notable portion of respondents raised issues related to environmental policies and labor laws, particularly regarding sustainability requirements and financial challenges.

Workforce development remains a pressing issue, although hiring expectations have started to stabilize. While some businesses plan to expand their workforce, a larger portion intends to maintain current staffing levels, reflecting a cautious approach to labor investment. More businesses are participating in internships and training programs, but the challenge of attracting and retaining skilled workers persists.

Technology continues to play an increasing role in agribusiness, with growing adoption of data analytics and automation to improve efficiency. However, cybersecurity remains a critical weakness, as many businesses have yet to implement adequate protections against cyber threats. With digital tools becoming more integral to operations, strengthening cybersecurity will be essential in the coming years.

The 2025 State of Ag survey highlights both opportunities and challenges facing Minnesota’s agricultural sector. While many remain optimistic about the future, economic constraints, workforce shortages, and regulatory concerns continue to shape business strategies. Moving forward, investment in workforce development, engagement in policy discussions, and adaptation to emerging technologies will be key factors in sustaining growth. GreenSeam and its partners will continue to use these findings to advocate for policies and initiatives that support a resilient and prosperous agricultural industry.
