(Minneapolis, MN)  —  Minneapolis’ teachers’ union is defending the policy that would see white teachers laid off first after a conservative group filed a lawsuit. The group Judicial Watch wants a judge to suspend the policy which went into place last spring that would have Minneapolis Public Schools fire white teachers with seniority in order to keep teachers from ‘underrepresented populations.’ The Minneapolis Federation of Teachers yesterday said the policy is aimed at keeping teachers of color in the classroom, and brushed off the lawsuit as a ‘far-right’ attack. The city’s school district last week also defended the race-based firing policy as a way to make up for past discrimination.
