Mankato Man Charged with Fleeing a Peace Officer and Driving after Suspension

A Mankato man was charged with fleeing a peace officer, driving after suspension, and speeding. Blaine Thomas Zzernechel of Mankato was charged Friday in Blue Earth County District Court with the following counts:

Fleeing a Peace Officer in a Motor Vehicle, a Felony with a Maximum Sentence of 3 years and one day or a $5,000 fine, or both.

Driving After Suspension, a Misdemeanor with a Maximum Sentence of 90 days or a $1,000 fine, or both. 

Speeding – Exceed Limit – 65 mph on Freeways and Expressways, a Petty Misdemeanor with a Maximum Sentence of a $300 fine.

On January 16, 2025, at 4:37 PM, Blue Earth County Sheriff’s deputies observed a vehicle that was estimated to be travelling eastbound on Highway 14 at over 90 mph, in Blue Earth County. The posted speed limit in that area is 65 mph. Deputies obtained a radar reading indicating the vehicle was travelling 97 mph. The driver, who was identified as Blaine Thomas Zernechel had a suspended driver’s license. Deputies noted smoke and tire marks at the intersection of the ramp Zernechel had fled. A nearby driver pointed to the west on ramp to Highway 14. Deputies located the vehicle travelling SB on County Road 57. After a traffic stop was initiated, Zernechel initially stated he fled because his dad fell and he was trying to get him help. Zernechel ultimately admitted he saw Deputies and panicked and that he knew he would not get away when he saw Deputies on County Road 57 so he pulled over.
