Mankato Public Safety Launches “Keep the Wreath Bright” Holiday Fire-Prevention Campaign
The Mankato Department of Public Safety has launched its annual fire-prevention campaign, “Keep the Wreath Bright, Prevent a Red Light,” running Thursday, Nov. 27, through Thursday, Jan. 1.
A wreath will be on display at the Public Safety Center, 710 S. Front St., as a visual reminder of the increased risk of fires and fire-related injuries during the holiday season. The wreath begins the season illuminated with clear bulbs. When a preventable fire occurs, a clear bulb is replaced with a red bulb. Blue bulbs are added to represent preventable fire-related injuries.
The campaign aims to raise awareness about common holiday hazards, especially cooking and decorations. According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home cooking fires.
Holiday fire-prevention tips include:
- Stay attentive while cooking and keep flammable items at least three feet from the stove.
- Consider battery-operated flameless candles. If using real candles, keep them at least 12 inches from anything that burns, place them in sturdy holders and extinguish them before leaving the room.
- Inspect holiday lights each year and discard strands that are frayed or have damaged wiring.
- Water fresh Christmas trees daily and keep them at least three feet from heat sources.
- Install and maintain working smoke alarms on every level of your home.
The Department of Public Safety encourages residents to take simple steps to reduce risks and keep the wreath bright throughout the holiday season.
