On March 11th at 1:03 pm Blue Earth County deputies, conservation officers and personnel from Madison Lake Fire and Mayo Ambulance responded to the DNR access area of Madison Lake to assist with a man that had fallen through the ice approximately 1600 feet from shore.

First responders located 71-year-old Frank David Cesario of rural Mankato in the water holding onto the edge of the ice. 75-year-old Joseph Edward Postels of North Mankato was on the ice in the same area. Both men had been fishing and were loaded into inflatable rafts and brought to shore.
No first responders were injured in the incident. Frank Cesario and Joseph Postels were both transported from the scene by ambulance for additional treatment related to possible hypothermia.

The Sheriff’s Office began issuing cold-weather floatation suits to patrol deputies several years ago to facilitate rapid response to these types of situations. Multiple deputies used the suits to enter the water to bring the men to safety.
