Sleepy Eye Police Department Responds to Social Media School Threat
The Sleepy Eye Police Department was notified this morning, September 1, 2026, of a social media post referencing both schools in Sleepy Eye. The post was distributed through TikTok and included photographs of the schools along with a threatening statement directed toward Sleepy Eye schools.
The Sleepy Eye Police Department immediately began working with representatives from Sleepy Eye Public Schools and St. Mary’s School to assess the situation. At this time, law enforcement has not identified any credible threat to either school.
Out of an abundance of caution, and in coordination with both school administrations, both schools will remain in a soft lockdown for the school day. This precaution secures the exterior perimeter of the schools and restricts access to outside visitors while allowing normal classroom activities to continue inside the buildings.
Additional Sleepy Eye Police Department officers have been called in and will be monitoring both schools throughout the day.
The incident is currently under investigation. Investigators are working to identify the individual responsible for creating and distributing the post. As part of the investigation, law enforcement is pursuing legal process, including a search warrant, to obtain information identifying the creator of the social media account or post.
The department is aware that similar school-related social media threats have been circulating nationwide. While there is currently no indication of a credible threat to either Sleepy Eye school, all threats are taken seriously and investigated accordingly.
The Sleepy Eye Police Department asks parents, students, and community members to remain calm and avoid sharing or reposting the threatening content, as doing so can contribute to the spread of misinformation and potentially interfere with the investigation.
