Two Injured After Vehicle Crashes into Hillcrest Rehabilitation Center Thursday

On June 26th at 7:23 pm, area first responders were dispatched to the Hillcrest Rehabilitation Center at 714 South Bend Avenue in South Bend Township for a report that a vehicle crashed into the building.

Initial investigation determined that 72-year-old Alice Lenora Laukkonen of rural Mankato was driving her 2024 Volkswagen Jetta northbound on County Road 33 when the vehicle left the roadway and struck the west side of the building.

One resident of Hillcrest sustained minor injuries and was transported to MCHS for additional treatment. All residents were able to remain on side for the night and were relocated within the building.

Alice Laukkonen sustained minor injuries in the crash and was transported to MCHS for treatment. Deputies detected impairment and processed Alice Laukkonen for DWI. The investigation is continuing, and charges are pending the results of the chemical test.

Additional responding agencies included South Bend Fire, Mankato DPS Police and Fire and Mayo Ambulance. The Sheriff’s Office remains in contact with Hillcrest Management to offer any additional assistance that may be needed.
