Universal School Meals Bill Heads to Minnesota Senate Floor
All students in Minnesota would receive free breakfast and lunch at school under a bill headed to the Senate floor. G-O-P Senator Torrey Westrom from Alexandria says we already have free lunch programs for low-income students:
“We’re taking more money out of the coffers to pay for kids and families that already have the means to pay for their children’s lunch or elect not to participate.”
D-F-L Senator Nick Frentz of North Mankato supports the measure:
“We should be asking questions about the money. But I just want to make a quick point here, we’re talking about providing food for these students at the time when it is the most helpful for what we’re trying to focus on which is their education.”
Supporters say it ensures that our children have the food they need to learn and be healthy.
