Power restored to about 90% of affected Xcel Energy customers after back-to-back storms
Xcel Energy crews have restored electric service to about 90% of the customers who lost power after back-to-back severe storms came through the region Sunday night and again Monday night.
Both rounds of severe weather brought lightning, heavy rain, hail and high winds up to 65 mph that damaged electric infrastructure and caused outages for about 300,000 customers across Minnesota, primarily in the Twin Cities metro, and western Wisconsin. Crews will continue to make progress tonight and tomorrow to restore power to the remaining 25,000 customers, and that work is expected to be complete by Thursday evening.
More than 2,000 crew members quickly mobilized to assess damage and are working to safely restore service to customers in the region. The company called in hundreds of additional crew members to assist, including its own crews from its Colorado and Texas service areas. Mutual aid partners Minnesota Power, Otter Tail Power Company and Madison Gas and Electric sent about 100 workers to help Xcel Energy crews.
Crews prioritize the largest outages first to restore power to as many people as possible early on. Xcel Energy knows losing power is difficult and the company thanks customers for their patience and support of its crews. Customers can visit the Outage Map to see their latest estimated restoration times, which will be updated as crews continue their work.
For safety, Xcel Energy asks everyone to stay away from downed or sagging power lines. Always assume an electric line, even one on the ground, is energized and dangerous. Never touch or move a downed power line; instead, leave the area and report it immediately by calling 1-800-895-1999.
