Adopt a Fire Hydrant
Adopt a fire hydrant to keep it clear of snow and ice to help firefighters respond to emergencies quickly and efficiently. Visible hydrants are important because every second counts when fire crews respond to a fire. To keep hydrants clear, shovel ice and snow in a three-foot radius around the hydrant. In addition to helping firefighters, when hydrants are visible from the road, plow drivers can see them, which helps avoid repair costs.
It’s also a good time to shovel, salt, sand and clear sidewalks and pedestrian ramps. Sidewalk safety is everyone’s responsibility and helps make navigating snow and ice safe for everyone. City code section 6.03 requires snow and ice to be removed from City sidewalks to ensure public safety. Within 24-hours after snow stops, if snow or ice is not removed from sidewalks next to a property by the property owner or resident, a city-hired contractor will do so and a removal cost (minimum of $75) is charged to the property owner.
