City of Mankato to Host Volunteer Tree Planting Along West Mankato Trail
The City of Mankato will host a volunteer tree planting event along the West Mankato Trail (corner of Tile Street and Moreland Avenue) on Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The new trees will provide shade, help clean and cool the air, enhance the trail experience, and beautify the surrounding neighborhood.
The project is part of the Cooling Minnesota Communities initiative, which focuses on reducing extreme heat, strengthening climate resiliency, and increasing access to urban tree canopies. The City is partnering with Great River Greening to carry out the planting.
Volunteers will assist with placing trees into pre-dug holes, loosening root balls, filling with soil, watering, and spreading mulch. All training, tools, and supplies will be provided on-site, and no prior experience is required.
Registration is required for all participants through Great River Greening.
Funding for this initiative comes from the Building Resilient Urban Forests for Climate Change grant, supporting a partnership between the City of Mankato and Great River Greening. In total, this collaboration will result in the planting of more than 200 trees on city property and in city-owned right-of-ways throughout Mankato over two years.
