The City of Owatonna has selected Annie Harman to serve as its Communications Specialist, a newly reconfigured position designed to strengthen communication both within the organizations and between the City and the community it serves.

Harman, a longtime local journalist formerly of the Owatonna People’s Press, official began in the role on August 11.

“Effective communication is essential to building trust and strengthening the relationship between the City and the community we serve. This position gives us an opportunity to be more intentional about how we communicate with residents, how we share the work happening across the organization, and how we engage with our community,” said City Administrator Jenna Tuma. “Annie brings a unique combination of journalism experience, knowledge of Owatonna and established relationships throughout the community. We are excited to have her bring that perspective to the City and help us all tell our story in a way that is timely, accessible and meaningful to residents.”

Harman has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Print Journalism from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She began working for the Owatonna People’s Press in 2017 as a reporter, covering local government, breaking news and human interest stories, before being named editor in 2021. Harman is actively involved in Owatonna Business Women, the Rotary Club of Owatonna, the Owatonna Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, the United Way of Steele County and other local volunteer and service initiatives.

“I’ve had the privilege of telling Owatonna’s stories for many years, and I’m excited for the opportunity to serve this community in a new way,” Harman said. “I look forward to helping residents stay informed, engaged and connected with the working happening across our city.”
