Former Minnesota State Mavericks Win 2024-25 PWHL Walter Cup
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota State women’s hockey alumni Claire Butorac (2018-23), Brooke Bryant (2018-23) and Charlotte Akervik (2019-24) won the PWHL Walter Cup Championship Monday night at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul as members of the Minnesota Frost.
Both Bryant and Butorac won the Walter Cup for the second straight professional season. The Frost finished fourth in the PWHL regular season standings, then made a run to their second Championship by defeating the Ottawa Charge three games to one, including a 2-1 victory on Monday (May 26). All four games in the series went to overtime. Butorac (Andover, Minn.) skated in 29 regular season games with six points. She also appeared in six playoff contests, including games one and two in the finals. Butorac is a former Maverick captain and finished her MSU career with 56 points (21 goals, 35 assists). Bryant (Linden, Calif.) scored one goal with three assists in 26 regular season games this season. She also appeared in two playoff games. Bryant spent five seasons at Minnesota State. She recorded 66 points (30 goals, 36 assists) in 161 games and was a three-time WCHA All-Academic award winner. Akervik (Eau Claire, Wis.) appeared in two games for the Frost in her first season after appearing in 153 games on defense over five MSU seasons. She left the Mavericks as the program’s all-time leading scorer among defenders (22 goals, 35 assists). She was a two-time AHCA Krampade All-American Scholar and three-time WCHA All-Academic Team selection. Additionally, Frost team staff members with Minnesota State affiliation included Team Services Manager Nick Bryant and Assistant Equipment Manager Blake Kruse. Bryant worked as Director of Hockey Operations for Minnesota State women’s hockey (2015-17). Kruse served as a Student Assistant Equipment Manager for both Maverick Men’s and Women’s programs for three seasons. Minnesota State Women’s Hockey PWHL Champions
