Gateless parking coming to downtown Mankato ramps
In an effort to modernize parking and enhance the downtown experience, the City of Mankato has transitioned its four main parking ramps to a gateless, pay-by-plate system.
Parking enforcement and payment ($3 a day) begins Jan. 2, 2026.
Exit gates will be removed from the following ramps:
- Mankato Place Ramp (425 S. Riverfront Dr.)
- Civic Center Ramp (125 S. Riverfront Dr.)
- Second Street Ramp (320 S. Second St.)
- City Center Ramp (515 S. Riverfront Dr.)
Users will pay by scanning a QR code posted on clearly marked instructional signage throughout the ramps, including ramp stairwells or at pay stations located within the ramps.
How It Works
Drivers will park as usual and either visit a pay station or scan a QR code to pay. The system requires entry of a vehicle’s license plate number and accepts credit/debit cards and mobile wallets. Clear signage will be installed in all ramps with instructions on how to pay and where to find QR codes.
Once payment is made, the vehicle that was registered for the payment may park all day. When leaving, drivers may exit freely without stopping. Parking ramps are routinely monitored by enforcement staff, and vehicles without a valid payment during enforced hours may receive a citation.
Free Parking Periods
The first two hours of parking are free in all four ramps. In addition, parking is free after 5 p.m., on weekends, and during posted special events.
The Mankato City Council approved a $332,000 investment to implement the new technology. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve accessibility, reduce traffic congestion, and align Mankato’s parking system with modern practices used in cities nationwide.
