  • The Minnesota Senate is closed today (Mon) in observance of Martin Luther King Junior Day. The Senate Taxes, Capital Investment, and Higher Education committees are meeting on Tuesday. House Republicans are holding a session today at the Capitol despite the holiday. House Democrats will not return to St. Paul until G-O-P leaders accept a power-sharing agreement. Republicans have a one-vote majority in the House until a special election in District 40-B.
  • Minnesota State University Mankato is hosting the premier documentary “MLK 11-12-61” screening tonight (Mon 6-8 pm) at the Ostrander Auditorium. The film is about a 1961 visit to Mankato where Doctor King gave two sermons at Centenary Methodist Church and a speech at Mankato High School. The 50-minute film showing will be followed by a 30-minute panel discussion and a presentation of the Greater Mankato Diversity Council’s Pathfinder awards. The event is free and open to the public.
  • Plymouth officials say local police and sergeant union voted no confidence in police chief Erik Fadden. The unions involved are Police Officer Local 18 and Sergeant Union 34. Fadden responded to the vote of no confidence by saying that he was discouraged by the letter from the unions. He added that he remains committed to fostering communication, collaboration, teamwork, and respect as we move forward together.

  • People in Minnesota and across the U-S are honoring the legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Junior on this state and federal holiday (Mon). State Representative Cedrick Frazier of New Hope believes we have made progress in America since Doctor King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, but says there’s much more work to be done. Frazier said, “He talked about some of the promises that were made in terms of ensuring that there were resources and equitable access to housing, to jobs, to education. And those are things we still see today where we see large disparities and inequities in terms of who gets access and who doesn’t get access.” There are M-L-K Day events and celebrations across Minnesota today.
