A legislative auditor is reporting that the Minnesota Department of Human Services failed to provide adequate oversight when awarding tens of millions of dollars in grants.  The grants were intended to support the homeless and people needing housing assistance.  A financial audit revealed serious weaknesses in the agency’s internal controls.  Violations of the state’s legal requirements for managing grants were found within two divisions of the agency.  Human Services Commissioner Jodi Harpstead says the findings must be considered in context with the pressures faced during the pandemic to help people in need.
