Minnesota DPS Awards $1.4 Million in Bus Stop Arm Camera Grants
The state is awarding one-point-four-million dollars in grants to 19 Minnesota schools and transportation companies to install stop arm camera systems on school buses. Office of Traffic Safety Director Mike Hanson says there’s been a big increase in drivers disobeying extended stop arms and this camera technology:
“It takes that onus off of the bus driver and it allows the camera to capture all the evidence that needs to be gathered in order to hold the driver accountable for going through that stop arm when they shouldn’t.”
The cameras take a photo of a vehicle as it is approaching and departing the school bus stop arm. More than 46-hundred Minnesota drivers were cited for stop arm violations from 2017 through 2021.
