NAMI Minnesota (the National Alliance on Mental Illness) is seeking dedicated volunteers from Brown, Dodge, Waseca, and Sibley counties to become leaders for peer support groups that help individuals and families affected by mental illness.

Support group leaders play a crucial role in providing a safe and welcoming environment where participants can share experiences, offer support, and learn from one another. These groups are led by people who have either lived experience with a mental illness or are family members supporting a loved one with a mental illness.

“Support groups can be life-changing,” said Sue Abderholden, NAMI Minnesota executive director. “They offer connection, understanding, and hope. We’re looking for people who want to use their experience to help others who may be feeling overwhelmed or alone.”

Volunteers must be 18 or older and commit to facilitating a group 2–4 times per month for at least one year. Free training and ongoing support are provided. Groups may meet online or in person, depending on community needs and volunteer availability.

NAMI Minnesota is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people and families affected by mental illness through education, support, and advocacy. All support groups are free and peer-led. If you’re interested in making a difference in your community, contact Kirsten Weiss at sgc@namimn.org for more information.
