Twin Rivers Council for the Arts’ Writers Series, in partnership with the North Mankato Taylor Library’s Community Read, is proud to present an evening with acclaimed Minnesota-born author J. Ryan Stradal on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at the Spring Lake Park Warming House, 650 Webster Ave, North Mankato, MN 56003.

Stradal’s debut novel, Kitchens of the Great Midwest, became a New York Times bestseller and a beloved celebration of the people, traditions, and flavors of the Midwest. The book has earned recognition on bestseller lists from the Los Angeles Times, IndieBound, Amazon, and Publishers Weekly. Two hundred and fifty free copies of the book were distributed in early September by the North Mankato Taylor Library to community members.

Kitchens of the Great Midwest follows the story of Eva Thorvald, a young woman with a once-in-a-generation palate and uses the lens of food to explore the family ties, friendships, and chance encounters that shape a life. From Lutheran church bake-offs and chili pepper contests to the rituals of deer season, Stradal captures the heart and humor of the American Midwest.

Known for his big-hearted storytelling and engaging public talks, Stradal will retrace his unconventional path to becoming a bestselling author, weaving in personal anecdotes from his Minnesota upbringing and the culinary traditions that inspired his work.

“This event is a chance for our community to connect with one of today’s most celebrated Midwestern voices,” said Katie Heintz, North Mankato Taylor Library Director Library Director and Rec & Culture Director. “Stradal’s writing and speaking both highlight the richness of our region’s stories.”

The 2025 Twin Rivers Writers series and this event were underwritten by the Bryan and Tami Paulsen Charitable Fund and the Carl and Verna Schmidt Foundation.
