Giving back is a tradition for the Nicollet-Sibley County Corn & Soybean Growers, who once again demonstrated their commitment to the community by donating food items and money to the St. Peter Area Food Shelf and Sibley County Food Shelf.

The board’s annual contribution helps support local families facing food insecurity while also promoting the benefits of soy-based products.

“Our board looks forward to our annual food shelf shopping trip,” Nicollet-Sibley County Corn and Soybean Board Chair Brett Annexstad said. “It’s incredibly rewarding to give back and support those in need in our community.”

Each year, the board carefully selects items that align with their mission of promoting soybeans, ensuring their donations not only provide nourishment but also educate consumers on the many forms in which soy can be found in everyday grocery items. The board also typically makes donations during the holiday season.

They use the list below to help them identify and purchase soybean-based products:

  • Edamame
  • Kinako flour
  • Kyodofu (freeze-dried tofu)
  • Lecithin (sometimes in cooking sprays)
  • Miso
  • Monoglycerides
  • Diglycerides
  • Natto
  • Okara (soy pulp)
  • Shoyu
  • Soybean
  • Soy sauce
  • Soya
  • Supro
  • Tamari
  • Tempeh
  • Teriyaki sauce
  • Textured soy flour (TSF)
  • Textured soy protein (TSP)• Textured vegetable protein (TVP)
  • Tofu
  • Yakidofu
  • Yuba

“By selecting soy-based products and labeling them with our county logo, we’re not only providing nutritious food but also raising awareness about the benefits of soy among the very people we’re helping,” Annexstad said.

This year, the board invested checkoff funds by donating $500 and about 400 pounds of food items, ensuring that families in Nicollet and Sibley counties have access to high-quality, protein-rich options. Their efforts reinforce the role that local farmers play in strengthening the community – one meal at a time.
