Pro-life group wants to intervene in abortion case, criticizes A-G Ellison for not appealing

A group called MOMS — Mothers Offering Maternal Support — is asking the court for permission to intervene in the case, after a Ramsey County judge struck down Minnesota’s parental notification and other anti-abortion laws and Attorney General Keith Ellison decided *not* to appeal.  The pro-life group’s attorney, Teresa Collett says there’s clear legal precedent that parents have a constitutional right to direct their minor children’s health care, and —

“As the court opinion itself indicates, the attorney general provided inadequate representation of parents’ rights.”

Ellison’s office says his response is the same as when the Ramsey County judge struck down the abortion laws:

“We defended the statute.  We’re not required to file endless appeals, particularly if we believe the outcome… (will) ultimately be the same.”

Ellison said even though he personally believes the abortion laws “were not good public policy… I have nonetheless vigorously defended those laws.”

Collett:

“The Minnesota Supreme Court has been clear that parents have a constitutional right to direct the health care, the well-being of their minor children.”
