Seal coats on several highways in southcentral and southwest MN to begin around August 4
Motorists are advised to expect delays on Highways 4, 14, 30, 71, 75, 83, 91, 109, 169, and I-90 in southcentral and southwest Minnesota beginning August 4, weather permitting, as crews apply a seat coat to protect the treated highways from the harsh Minnesota weather.
The impacted highway portions include:
- Highway 4
- North of Sleepy Eye, from Highway 68 to just south of 280th Street
- North of Sleepy Eye, from 280th Street Highway 19 near Fairfax

- Highway 14
- Cobden to west of 160th Street
- Sleepy Eye, from Township Road 318 to County Road 27
- Highway 30: Amboy to Mapleton
- Highway 71: Windom to Highway 30 east of Jeffers

- Highway 83: 3 miles south of Waldorf to 3 miles north of Pemberton

- Highway 109: Wells to Alden
- Highway 169
- North of Blue Earth to Winnebago
- Northbound from 1 miles south of Le Sueur to 1 mile north of Le Sueur
Traffic will be controlled with flaggers and a pilot car. Motorists should expect delays, drive with caution, and watch for workers, equipment, and traffic control devices.
The seal coat is a preventative maintenance measure that provides a protective layer, reducing deterioration due to sun and moisture. Drivers are encouraged to slow down and be alert for loose gravel and oil in these areas.
The sealcoating process for each highway segment will take one to two days. Crews will then return a couple weeks later to paint final striping, which will be done under traffic. The entire project will be completed by early September, depending on weather and material availability.
