The New Ulm Human Rights Commission Announces Winners of annual Human Rights Award
The New Ulm Human Rights Commission is proud to announce the annual Human Rights Award will be presented to two recipients this year – Jeanine Hinsman and the Makatoh Reconciliation and Healing Horse Ride Host Committee.
Jeanie Hinsman, along with volunteers, operates New Ulm’s Own which is a nonprofit fair-trade store featuring fair trade products handcrafted by artisans in developing countries and artwork created by local artisans. Profits from New Ulm’s Own support local charities such as NUMAS Haus, Brown County Family Services Foster Care Program, Ivy House, Westridge Place, and ProKinship.
Colleen Hokenson and the Hosting Committee for the Makatoh Reconciliation and Healing Horse Ride played an instrumental role in welcoming the riders to New Ulm by arranging meals and lodging for the riders and their horses during their ride from South Dakota to Mankato in December. Many spectators gathered along the streets to watch and show support for the riders as they rode through New Ulm during their 330-mile journey and watched a documentary about the 2007 Dakota 38+2 Ride. Both riders and New Ulm citizens expressed gratitude for the experience the Committee provided to promote healing and a sense of shared humanity and mutual respect.
The awards will be presented to the recipients on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the New Ulm Community Center, 600 North German Street.
