According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one in three adults has prediabetes. This condition occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough for a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Because prediabetes often has no symptoms, many people are unaware they have it. However, research shows that making lifestyle changes can significantly delay, or even prevent, the onset of diabetes.

To help address this growing health concern, VINE is offering a free, evidence-based Diabetes Prevention Program designed to support individuals in making lasting changes to improve their health.

“Diabetes impacts a significant number of older adults in our community,” said Jen Wunderlich, VINE’s Health and Fitness Center Manager. “Providing this program at no cost ensures everyone has access to the support and tools they need to take control of their health.”

VINE’s Diabetes Prevention Program has been proven to help people lose weight, eat healthier, get active, and reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. A trained lifestyle coach and class members offer help and support over the course of a year.

The next Diabetes Prevention Program begins on Monday, January 26 and will meet weekly at the VINE Adult Community Center from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. over the course of a year. The program is free and open to the public.

Individuals who know or believe they have prediabetes can learn more about the program at an informational meeting at the VINE Adult Community Center on Monday, January 12 from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Those interested can learn more about the program and register for the informational meeting online at vineovlunteers.org or by calling Wunderlich at (507) 386-5588.
