A Winnebago man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly assaulting a family member and threatening to burn down a home while intoxicated, according to a criminal complaint filed in Blue Earth County. Mathew James Perry McGuire, 29, is charged with felony domestic assault and felony threats of violence stemming from an incident on the night of June 7, 2025.

Officers were initially alerted to McGuire’s whereabouts after reports of a possible domestic incident and concerns that he may be driving under the influence with children in his vehicle. Authorities located McGuire’s van—with the engine running and driver’s side door open—at a relative’s residence in Lake Crystal. Although officers initially left after confirming the children’s safety, they returned later that evening after McGuire allegedly punched a family member in the face during a dispute over vehicle keys. The victim also reported that McGuire threatened to burn the house down. Deputies later arrested McGuire near the scene.

McGuire has two prior domestic assault convictions from 2015 and 2018, qualifying the latest incident as a felony under Minnesota law. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison for each of the two charges.
