On Monday June 8, 2026 at approximately 0630 hours, the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of a disabled pick up truck in the lane of traffic on State Hwy 83 and Blue Earth County Road 90. Deputies and State Troopers arrived and found it abandoned. At 0700 hours the Sheriff’s Office received a call of a burglary of a residence where a car was stolen in the area of where the disabled pickup truck was at. Law Enforcement were advised from witnesses that the alleged stolen car at one point was near the abandoned vehicle and a male was taking stuff from the pickup and putting it in the alleged stolen vehicle.
At approximately 0839 hours, Blue Earth County Dispatch received a call of a suspicious vehicle south of Amboy on a rural property. The owner described the car, the license plate and the male driver. Several law enforcement agencies went to the area south of Amboy. Mapleton Police located the vehicle traveling north on Co Rd 36. Mapleton Police attempted to stop the vehicle however it fled north at speeds around 100 mph. It then stopped and turned around heading back south on Co Rd 36. A Faribault County Sheriff’s Deputy was in the area and deployed tire deflation devices to try and disable the vehicle. The vehicle swerved around the devices and went into the ditch and a farm field. Officer pursued the vehicle into the field when the driver exited the vehicle.
As the suspect exited the vehicle, he fired several rounds from a handgun in the air and at the Sheriff’s Deputy as he was running on foot. As more law enforcement arrived at the scene, they were able to set up a perimeter around the open fields to contain the suspect. The suspect continued to fire several times at law enforcement.
Law Enforcement was able to observe he didn’t have the gun in his hand anymore and they closed in on the suspect giving him commands to surrender. He continued to be non-compliant and ultimately law enforcement used less lethal tactics to bring him under control and take him into custody.
The gun was located buried in the middle of the field where he had fled at one point and several expended shell casings were also located at the scene where he was observed shooting at law enforcement.
Law Enforcement exercised extreme restraint, good judgment, and relied on their training to bring this situation to a safe conclusion. This incident could have ended in tragedy to the suspect or law enforcement.
Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Mapleton Police, Lake Crystal Police, Mankato Police, Faribault County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force, and Minnesota River Valley Tactical Team.
