At Monday’s City Council meeting, The Mankato City Council approved a $361,000 plan to remodel its chambers in the Intergovernmental Center, with the goal of improving accessibility, safety, and technology for public meetings. The redesign will rotate the layout 90 degrees, relocate the council dais to the north side of the room, and remove one of the two existing public entrances — leaving a single access point at the back of the room. Security upgrades discussed in a closed July meeting are not being fully detailed, but will include a secure exit for council members.

The project also includes a raised dais for improved visibility, ADA-compliant door openers, and a new presentation podium equipped with a video screen so officials can view maps, diagrams, and other materials without turning away from the audience. About $100,000 of the budget will go toward technology upgrades, while other enhancements include new carpet, lighting, and electrical improvements. Seating capacity will remain at roughly 78, with flexible furniture allowing the space to continue serving as a training room for city and school district staff.

Construction is expected to begin in December after the council’s annual schedule slows, with completion targeted for early January 2026. The Mankato Area Public Schools board, which also uses the space, has already arranged alternate meeting plans during the renovation.
