A Saint Peter police officer is recovering after being shot during a lengthy law enforcement incident Thursday night in Saint Peter. According to authorities, the incident began when Mankato Police attempted to stop a speeding vehicle. The driver, an adult male, refused to stop and led officers north on Highway 169 into Saint Peter. Officers attempted to deploy a tire deflation device near Highway 99, but the suspect avoided it and continued through the city before stopping in the 2100 block of Bunker Lane and entering a residence.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded as a shelter-in-place advisory was issued for nearby residents. Authorities attempted to negotiate with the suspect, but those efforts were unsuccessful. During the incident, shots were fired, and a Saint Peter police officer was struck in the arm. The officer was taken to River’s Edge Hospital before being airlifted to a Twin Cities-area hospital, where the officer remains in stable condition.

The Nicollet County Sheriff’s Office says law enforcement officers entered the residence and came under gunfire, resulting in the officer being wounded and a Nicollet County deputy discharging their firearm. Officers later located the suspect deceased inside the residence. The shelter-in-place order was lifted, and officials say there is no ongoing threat to the public. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation.
