Mankato Clinic Foundation awards J. Scott Sanders, M.D., Memorial Scholarships to two local students
The Mankato Clinic Foundation awarded J. Scott Sanders, M.D., Memorial Scholarships to two local students selected through a competitive blind review process. Each student received a $2,000 scholarship.
- Brandon Honsey, a graduating senior of Maple River High School, will attend South Central College to pursue a degree in the automotive service program.
- Molly Ruona, a graduating senior of Mankato East High School, will attend the University of Minnesota Twin Cities to pursue a degree in neuroscience.
The scholarship honors J. Scott Sanders, M.D., Mankato Clinic physician, pulmonologist and critical care specialist, who died in May 2006 after a courageous battle with cancer. Known for his character and compassion, Dr. Sanders made a lasting impact on patients, colleagues and the community.
In that spirit, graduating seniors submit an essay on the impact of character, either their own or someone else’s, and how that lesson will shape the way they lead their lives.
In his essay, Honsey shared how his adoptive parents changed his life by giving him stability after being in and out of foster care. Through their steady support, patience, and commitment, his parents showed him the kind of character he hopes to carry forward.
In her essay, Ruona reflected on her experience as a certified nursing assistant, where she learned how simple gestures can brighten someone’s day. When she French braided a resident’s hair, she was rewarded with a smile she’ll never forget. As she pursues a medical career, she intends to practice moments of kindness in service to others.
“Every year when we read these essays, our scholarship committee is moved and inspired by the strength and potential of young people in our community,” said Barb Sanders, widow of Dr. Sanders. “We are proud to recognize Molly and Brandon for their meaningful reflections and their dedication to carrying these life lessons and values forward.”
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be high school seniors residing within the Mankato Clinic service area, which includes Mankato, North Mankato, St. Peter, Lake Crystal, Mapleton and nearby communities. For more information, visit Mankato Clinic Foundation.
