Fire safety is the focus on this day three (Wed) of Winter Hazard Awareness Week in Minnesota.  State Fire Marshall Jim Smith says, have *working* C-O detectors and smoke alarms in every living area, never use an extension cord with a space heater, and do not put a heater near your bed:

“A lot of people like it next to the bed because it keeps their bed warm, but in the middle of the night if you toss and turn, your blanket could fall off the bed and drape over a space heater, and that could cause really bad things to happen.”

If you have a wood-burning stove or fireplace, be sure no combustibles are nearby.  Smith says keep fire hydrants clear of snow and

make sure gas meters and vents are also clear of snow and ice.
