Klobuchar introduces legislation to crack down on catalytic-converter thefts
Senator Amy Klobuchar is pushing to stem the tide of catalytic converter thefts that has plagued Minnesota and spread across the nation. Klobuchar’s bill would require all new vehicles have the VIN (vehicle identification) number on the catalytic converter to discourage theft, and provide grants so existing vehicle owners can have an identifying number stamped on their catalytic converter:
“And then let’s make this a federal crime, just like we do with carjacking, because it is 15-hundred to two-thousand dollars to replace these catalytic converters.”
Klobuchar says the Justice Department busted a national catalytic-converter theft ring that amassed over 500 million dollars in assets.
